What are the most common doubts of people from Reus?

Queries regarding the council of Hisenda and also about Social Welfare were the most common that the Municipal Ombudsman of Greuges of Reus attended during 2021. This was explained by the Ombudsman himself, Pere Pagès, in the plenary session on April 22 in his last appearance before leaving office, next June, after ten years. Examining the document more closely, among all the open files (a total of 393), one query especially stands out: how to access or contact Serveis Socials. The issues relating to the attention to this service that came into the hands of the Ombudsman last year totaled 19 files, and action was taken by requesting an appointment. Ten more files were also directly related to Serveis Socials, although for other reasons. In total, thirty open files on this service.

Municipal sources consulted in this regard recall that Serveis Socials are open to all citizens. «The Atenció Primeríssima and the Primera Acollida are the access point to the Basic Social Services for people who apply for the first time or who, despite having an open file, do not need a specific intervention related to any specific area», is remembered.

And how to do it? In Atenció Primeríssima, if the person has an open file, they have to call by phone and they will be directed to the corresponding area of ​​attention. On the other hand, if the person addresses for the first time or for more than half a year, they will do so through three channels: telephone 977 010 034; email, citapreviaareabenestar@reus.cat or in person, by going to the offices of Serveis Socials located in the old hospital, on Sant Joan street. It can also be accessed from the Office of Citizen Services or through transversal files. If necessary, the request will be referred to First Acollida, where the team will make an initial social assessment and diagnosis, process and manage the appropriate resources. As for Continuous Care, people with an open file are cared for at the central offices of Serveis Socials and at the Civic Centers.

From the consistory, it is recalled that in 2021 a change of model was opted for in the telephone service to citizens, training several professionals specifically to be able to carry out a first screening, receiving, informing, advising and referring citizens , according to the needs.

“Since the pandemic, we have noticed a collapse,” explains Sandra Casanova, a member of the PAH in Reus. And it is that the Covid and the resulting economic crisis have increased the social emergency. In 2021, the Social Services Basic Teams in Reus attended to 21,100 people (also including consultations), according to municipal sources consulted, “and people cannot wait,” Casanova denounces. She details that there are cases in which they spend two months waiting for an appointment «and we know that the tools are very precarious, but action has to be taken. There are more and more people on the street », she warns, while she emphasizes that « without a roof, there is no decent life ».

Regarding the council of Hisenda, many of the files opened by the Síndic Municipal de Greuges referred to capital gains. Security and coexistence also stand out, with a total of 33 open files in 2021.
