Well visible pedestrian crossings

Jose Carlos Ruiz (Cordova51 years old) and Carlos Quiroga (Reus49 years old) are the two people behind stepviala startup of electronics applied to Smart Cities based in Montbrio del Camp (Baix Camp) and specialized in intelligent road signaling systems.

Crosswalks that light up at night when they detect that a person is going to cross, facilitating visibility Y alerting to nearby vehicles, but also cycle paths with road markings on the pavement that light up depending on the traffic and forward the data they collect from a traffic control center, roundabouts, roads Y freeways with intelligent signage, or paneled sidewalks with information for pedestrians (adapting to the tendency that many people have today of looking at the ground, consulting their smartphoneinstead of keeping a frontal view) are some of the solutions they propose.

Recently, this startup was a finalist in the eighth edition of the Entrepreneurs and Road Safety Award from the Fundación Línea Directa, where it competed with other innovative proposals in road safety. José Carlos Ruiz, inventor of the intelligent pedestrian crossing, says that what distinguishes them is the focus of their solutions, centered on the pedestrian: “Everything was oriented to the driver, and we turned it around completely, putting the pedestrian in the center” .

“Everything was driver-oriented: we put the pedestrian in the center”

With the process of decarbonization Y pedestrianization of urban centers, «there will be more traffic of pedestrians, cyclists, skateboards…», reasons José Carlos Ruiz, who predicts an explosion of technological solutions aimed at these new uses and demands.

Of all of them, smart pedestrian crossings were the first. A human presence detector activates the lighting of a path of plates embedded in the asphalt, which accompanies the pedestrian throughout his journey. The first one they installed was in Cambrils (Baix Camp). Others followed him at various points of Catalonia Y Spainbut also in Andorra, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, Mexico, Chili, Greece either Egypt. «At an international level -explains José Carlos Ruiz- we have a lot of movement».

With headquarters and central offices in Montbrió del Camp and a production plant in Córdoba (which, thanks to funds Next Generation EUwill move to Asturias after the summer, with the opening of a larger plant), Stepvial, established in 2016, is present today in some 50 municipalities in Spain and has a workforce of seven people, who will double after the summer with the new factory.

The next step is “to see the first section of smart bike lane up and running, and we would be delighted if it were in the province of Tarragona,” says José Carlos Ruiz. Smart road markings for bicycle lanes, explains this electronic engineer, serve so that “at that point where cyclists, people with scooters and pedestrians cross, a camera detects the priorities of passage and illuminates, for example, the crossing of pedestrians to the time it puts a STOP mark on the cyclist with a led display, all in real time with the platform smart from the city”.

very focused on urban plotsin addition to malls, airports Y level crossings with barriershope to close the present 2022 with a billing between 700,000 and 800,000 euros.
