Under the uniform | Tarragona Newspaper

Raniero Cantalamessa, the Capuchin friar preacher of the Pontifical Household, recounts a memory of his childhood when fascism fell in Italy. They lived in a valley of the Apennines. One day the retreating Germans blew up a bridge very close to his house. The explosion broke all the glass and caused cracks.

The German soldier who set off the explosive stopped in his flight and showed them a photograph of his family.

The preacher always kept this memory and commented on it saying that that young man, under the uniform and the helmet, hid a profound humanity. With such a gesture he wanted to apologize for doing that damage that he would not have wanted.

Reading it I think of many young Russians unintentionally pushed into a determined war in distant offices.
