The National Police has arrested the Ukrainian blogger Anatoly Shariy in Roda de Berà, who is accused of treason, among other charges. Shariy (43 years old) has been registered since this year in the town of Tarragonès, where he lives in a house with great security measures: cameras and security guards.
Hours later, the judge of the National High Court, José Luis Calama, has decreed the provisional release with precautionary measures for the Ukrainian Anatoli Shariy, demanded for his extradition by the authorities of his country for crimes of high treason and incitement to hatred.
The blogger and politician from kyiv was arrested this Wednesday by virtue of an international warrant and will be brought before the National High Court, the competent court in this matter. The arrest was carried out by agents of the National Police. His wife and his two sons remain in the house.
The statement from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) released by the Ukrinform communication agency explains that “the Spanish law enforcement forces (National Police Corps, CNP) arrested Anatoly Shariy.” The detention “was possible thanks to the close cooperation of the Security Service of Ukraine with the Prosecutor General’s Office, international partners and as a result of a multi-level special operation of Ukrainian law enforcement officers,” the statement added.
The SBU emphasizes that this arrest is further evidence that “every traitor in Ukraine will sooner or later receive a deserved punishment, it is inevitable.” The Ukrainian special service suspects that Shariy committed crimes under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: art. 111 (treason) and 161 (violation of the equality of citizens according to their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability and other causes).
According to SBU investigators, the blogger carried out illegal activities to the detriment of Ukraine’s national security in the field of information. “There are reasons to believe that Shariy acted on behalf of foreign structures.” The evidence of the investigation is confirmed by a series of expert studies, which established that in Shariy’s interviews and speeches there are facts of his subversive activities against Ukraine. . He was declared a suspect last year,” the statement said.
Apparently, on February 22, Shariy was summoned for an investigation in Ukraine, but did not appear. In an interview last July in Barcelona, the Ukrainian journalist and politician also indicated that he was calm in Spain until that year neo-Nazi groups had located him and he feared that he would be extradited by kyiv. He lived in Barcelona and then moved to a house on the seafront, in Roda de Berà, where he had been since 2019.
The blogger, with a YouTube channel followed by almost 2.5 million subscribers where he denounces the alleged corruption in his country, has political refugee status in Lithuania, which has allowed him to move around the territory of the European Union.
