Less than 24 hours have passed since the blogger and journalist Anatoly Shariy went from being arrested by an international order to being released with charges by the magistrate of the Central Court of Instruction number 4 of the National Court, José Luis Calama.
This 43-year-old Ukrainian has been the media focus in Roda de Berà since the beginning of the Russian invasion. And we say neighbor of this town in Tarragonès because it is the place where he has lived since 2019 and where he has been registered since then.
His pro-Russian ideas and contrary to the government of President Volodímir Zelenski and previous governments have increased media interest after the Russian invasion of his country. Not only his messages on the networks generate debate and controversy, he is also haunted by an aura of suspicion by having to flee the country a decade ago accused of various crimes of which he defends himself, arguing that they were unfounded accusations due to investigations of possible corruption. of the government of President Viktor Yanukovych.
In Roda de Berà Shariy lives in a fortress. Security cameras and security guard at the door 24 hours. The threats that he attributes to neo-Nazi groups linked to his country are enough of an argument to protect himself. And in these weeks of war, two Ukrainian protests have appeared in the vicinity. The first was convened through networks and without permission to carry it out; the second did have police authorization. Both ended without incidents of consideration or arrests.
Yesterday the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform made Shariy’s detention public. National Police sources explained that the arrest was motivated by an international arrest warrant issued by the National High Court. The agents took the neighbor from Roda de Berà and transferred him to Madrid, where he went to court yesterday.
The arrest, according to sources from the Security Service (SBU) of that country, is due to the suspicion that Anatoly Shariy could have committed crimes stipulated in two articles of the Penal Code of his country. Article 111 (high treason) and article 161 (violation of the equality of citizens based on their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability and other reasons).
The same SBU sources add that “the evidence of the investigation is confirmed by a series of expert studies, which established that in the interviews and speeches there are facts of their subversive activities against Ukraine.” According to the secret services, the defendant was accused in 2021, without specifying whether the evidence that has been collected is prior to 2012, when he fled the country, or is more recent documents from when he lived in Lithuania, the Netherlands or Spain.
The truth is that Judge Calama and in agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office decided to provisionally release Rodense precisely because of his roots for three years in the town and a little more in Catalonia (he lived in Barcelona). This does not prevent him from appearing every 15 days in the courts of El Vendrell, the one closest to his home.
The judge has withdrawn his passport and therefore he will not be able to leave Spain. This precautionary measure with provisional release is until Ukraine requests his extradition. The measure expires in one month. If the Zelensky government does not request extradition during this period, the precautionary measures will cease to be in force.
