The Generalitat transfers the use of the Palau d’Esports Catalunya to the Tarragona City Council

The Generalitat and the Tarragona City Council have staged this Wednesday the transfer of use of the Palau d’Esports Cataluña. After resolving administrative issues, the Government has handed over the management of the facility to the council, which has stated that it will be available to the city’s clubs from the start of next season, around September.

The city council will have to invest 505,000 euros to finish equipping it with the necessary material for practicing sports and maintenance will cost around 200,000 euros per year. The Minister of the Presidency, Laura Vilagrà, has symbolically handed over the keys to the site to the Mayor Pau Ricomà.

Ricomà has stated that the pavilion will be “the cornerstone of Tarragona’s sports facilities” and has thanked the Generalitat for the investment it made on the occasion of the 2018 Mediterranean Games. However, due to administrative issues regarding the land where the Palau, until now it has not been possible to seal the assignment to the town hall. “Today we close a phase that has perhaps been gray and we open another one full of light”, highlighted the mayor.

The intention of the City Council is that the equipment is available to the entities and athletes of the city, but in turn the consistory works so that it can welcome undergraduate students or training cycles related to the world of sports and also to attract events and training stays from clubs around the world.

For his part, Vilagrà has highlighted the “collaboration between administrations” and has valued that the transfer is “great news for the clubs and athletes of Tarragona”. “It is an exceptional facility, magnificent equipment”, he said, noting that it is a modern pavilion and a leader in the country in terms of energy efficiency and modernity. In addition, he has assured that the Generalitat “will always be with Tarragona.”
