The delta of l’Ebre starts a new campaign of l’arròs, both the flooding of the fields in one part and the dry sowing in another. The tret de sortida is donated about 15 days later than the usual dates, start of the abundant plugs of this spring, which have delayed the treballs of preparation of the camps. The irrigation communities have initiated the release of the water: dissabte will start the flooding of the first camps to the right margin of the Delta, by the area of Buda and Illa de Riu, while other dimecres will farà the margin esquerre.
In this part of the Delta, corresponding to the Baix Ebre region, most of the streams are sown dry, a technique implemented in the last few years to reduce the effects of the pomace caragol plague and which is more widely accepted each time, especially als termes de l’Aldea, l’Ampolla or Camarles. “Dry sowing is one of the most useful against the poma caragol, because of the tractaments amb saponines, which are cars and do not have such good results”, explains to the Diari the person in charge of the rice sector to the Unió de Pagesos union, Albert Pons.
The delay in the beginning of the campaign does not have an impact on the final collita, as explained by the arrossaires: it all depends on the weather from today, because if the heat aviates, it will accelerate the entire sowing and growing process of the plant.
The one that will have an impact on the final results of this campaign, which culminates in September with the harvest, are the production costs, which have been disparate, especially for those who make fertilizers, phytosanitary products and fuel. In the case of the adobs, the price increase is from fins to 300 per cent, details Albert Pons.
The delta arrossaires are showing misgivings because finally these higher production costs did not end up having repercussions in an increase in the price of the kilo of rice and supposed a significant reduction in the profitability of the conreu.
I agree that there are more conditions that, a priori, point to what the prices are for bidding, as for the significant decrease in production expected in Andalusia or Extremadura, due to the drought that affects those territories, as explained by the Union of Pagesos.
The arrossaires are also showing and uneasy about the effects that the new European Community Agricultural Policy (PAC) could have. «The one who sees that each time we have more conditions to be able to fer the nostra feina, less products, and they are not offered by us, has not provided research and technological transfer», laments Albert Pons.
The delta de l’Ebre is produced annually between 140 and 150 million kilos of rice.
