The Bank of Spain loses protection to win a project

The centenary building that until 2003 housed the offices of the former Bank of Spain has since yesterday had a lower level of equity in order to be able to have an executive project and see the light at the end of the dark tunnel in which it has been for almost two decades. For this reason, ERC, PSC, Junts per Tarragona, CUP and councilor Hermán Pinedo –with the abstention of PP and those not attached, in addition to the ‘no’ of Ciutadans– went ahead with partially reducing the protection of the property, which is Bé Cultural of Local Interest (BCIL). Otherwise, it would not be possible to carry out the long-awaited reform of the structure that is needed to convert the 1928 construction by the architect Juan de Zabala into the new Banc de la Ciència i del Coneixement.

Precisely for this reason, the Plens Hall agreed this Friday to promote the new executive project, which has a budget of 7.4 million euros. This is an increase of 50% compared to the 4.9 originally planned. This is due to the fact that, after receiving the European Feder grant in 2019 based on a basic project, the subsequent executive document warned that it was necessary to reinforce the structure of the property in order to guarantee its safety in the face of its opening to the public. In this sense, for the actions to become a reality, it was necessary to partially delist the property, which is expected to be financed through the Next Generation Funds.
