Sant Pere i Sant Pau: the home of 1 out of 10 people from Tarragona

Sant Pere i Sant Pau is today, with 16,193 registered people, the second most populous neighborhood in the city; slightly surpassed by Torreforta and its adjacent areas. In short, this neighborhood that celebrates half a century, is the home of 11.45% of Tarragona; roughly one in ten.

The age pyramid is not very different from that of Tarragona as a whole: thicker in the center and narrower at the ends, where the children and the elderly meet. In fact, last year almost as many children and adolescents from 0 to 15 years old (2,722) were registered as those over 65 (2,702).

The children who were born in the early days and forced to found schools have already grown up and now the largest group is that of mature adults. In fact, if you look at the register by decades, the largest group is that of the ’40-year-olds’ (2,948) followed by the ’50-year-olds’ (2,285). In addition, as a curiosity, it is worth saying that six centenarians are registered in the neighborhood.

Of course, within the neighborhood itself there are also differences. In Avinguda Països Catalans, children and adolescents make up more than 25%, while in the oldest area the opposite happens: 25% are over 65 years of age.

In the neighborhood there are almost as many women (8,138) as men (8,055) and a percentage of foreigners of 16.7%.

As far as residents born abroad are concerned, there are indeed relevant differences with respect to Tarragona as a whole, because here the most numerous origin is not that of those born in Morocco (555) but from Romania (918). The third largest group of foreign neighbors is that of Colombians (265) followed by Italians (127).

Socioeconomic level

As far as the socioeconomic level of its inhabitants is concerned, Sant Pere i Sant Pau is more similar to the expansion of Tarragona than to the neighborhoods of Ponent or Llevant. In fact, according to the socioeconomic index prepared by Idescat and which concentrates the information from six indicators into a single value: two on employment status, two on educational level, one on immigration and one on income, the neighborhood has an index of 98.1 out of 100, which is the average for Catalonia. It is also slightly higher than the city average, which has an index of 95.9.

The data with which the calculation is made is from 2019. Then 63.9% of the population of the neighborhood was employed, there were 10.5% of low-skilled workers, 16.1% of the population with low education; 33.1% of young people (20 to 34 years old) without post-compulsory studies and 13.2% of foreigners from low or middle income countries. The average income is 12,119 euros.

When it comes to housing there are also important contrasts. We take as reference the portal and there the most expensive area, with prices similar to those that can be found in l’Arrabassada, is in Països Catalans. The area where the houses are cheaper is the oldest.
