Salou’s urban revolution will arrive in 2027

The City Council of Salou yesterday presented the Eix Cívic project. The construction of this axis will mean a great transformation in the urban center of Salou, taking advantage of the space freed up by the old train tracks. The ambitious project is the largest of all those that have been carried out or will be carried out in the capital of the Costa Daurada with the aim of making the urban environment of the municipality more sustainable, inclusive and pedestrianised.

The Eix Cívic consists of the urbanization of this land, currently without any use or utility. It will be an area designed with pedestrians and sustainable transport at the center of mobility -with the exception of residents who must access their car parks-. Thus, a bike lane, green areas, leisure and rest spaces, etc. will be built. It will be designed taking into account the future Camp de Tarragona tramway. It will extend from the limit of the municipal term with Cambrils to the Reus Highway -which will incorporate two new roundabouts to enter and exit the urban core-, in a total of just under 2 kilometers in length and 64,976 square meters of surface.

The project also includes the construction of 16 blocks of flats that will add a total of 300 homes -around 100 of them protected-. An underground park and ride will be built, with capacity for approximately 500 vehicles.

This axis will allow, as explained by the mayor of Salou Pere Granados, to “eliminate a historic physical barrier in the municipality”, one of the main demands of the current municipal government in recent years. Granados assures that the Eix “will improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of Salou, as well as the experience of visitors.” The construction of the blocks will allow, for its part, the development of commercial activity on its ground floor. In this way, the economic activation of the area will be promoted, conceived as a place for walking, socializing and activity. The mayor highlighted the success of this urban model, without road traffic, with the first phase of Avinguda Carles Buïgas -inaugurated in July 2021- as an example.

A large square as the center

One of the key elements of the Eix Cívic will be the construction of a two-hectare square. This will integrate the Torre Vella, the Santa Maria del Mar Church and the old Carrilet Station. It will house the largest building in the project, with 8 floors, which will give the complex centrality.

Granados stated that, with the Eix Cívic, “the mobility of the population will also be improved, improving communication between the urban center and the beaches.” It will also allow the social and economic reactivation of areas previously affected by the proximity of the roads, such as the Barri de la Salut or the Major and Nord streets.

Budget and deadlines

The project has been budgeted at a total of 14 million euros, of which 5 correspond to the value of the land and 9 to the urbanization process, approximately. The financing will be in charge of the Government of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The mayor recalled that “it is the Generalitat that must comply with the agreements already signed so that the forecasts are fulfilled.”

These forecasts estimate that the Eix Cívic will be a reality and will be completed in 2027, after two years of work. The works are expected to begin in 2025 and to be carried out in parallel with those of the Camp de Tarragona Tramway. A citizen participation process is currently open in which all the inhabitants of Salou can contribute their ideas, concerns or suggestions about the project. In addition, informative meetings open to the public have been held and will be held.
