Salou becomes the paradise of eating, drinking and savoring

Salou has regained its pulse after the pandemic. Checked. The best proof of this are the thousands of visitors and residents who have already toured the 42 stands of the ‘Sabor Salou’ that since Friday have been installed on Passeig Jaume I in the capital of the Costa Daurada. Today is the last day of this delicious event that has brought together so many people. “We wanted an event like this. This is wonderful”, explains José Luis, a man from Reus who has not missed the opportunity to “enjoy gastronomy. It is a paradise weekend. Eat, drink and… above all savor. It is to live again. It is like returning to the paradise that we lost », he highlights.

Hèctor Maiquez, councilor for Dinamització Econòmica, fully agrees with this, emphasizing that “our goal is to bring people back to life. To a normal life. The last time we celebrated this ‘Sabor Salou’ event was in 2019». On that occasion, 42,000 visits were reached and 50,000 tastings were served. This time there is “a lot of enthusiasm, both among the restorers and among the public,” explains Maiquez, in a conversation that takes place in a coming and going of families, tourists and residents. Friends from different towns or from Salou itself who see each other’s faces after many months without doing it. And it is that «what good food does not achieve…» Ángel snaps at David, two Salouenses who finally get together to eat «after we had been planning it for months».

Andrea Mazzanti, technical director of ‘Sabor Salou’, is also satisfied with the course of the weekend and invited them to “take advantage of such an important comeback as this one”.

Until 12 at night
“It is being able to live on the street. Outdoor. Savoring top quality food”, assured Alicia, a young Zaragozan with a second residence in Salou and who starts the season dazzled by the great expectations that have been generated in the city.
Rice, octopus, noodles, seafood… All kinds of local or exotic products. It is about enjoying a true gastronomic feast. To this we must add the excellent weather of these two days. “You have to hurry until the last minute”, 12 at night, recalls Javier, who repeated the day yesterday after ‘opening’ on Saturday. “I’ll be back tomorrow,” he said.

Full satisfaction also among restorers. “It’s a good sign. I think the season is looking good for everyone. For the time being, we must be optimistic”, anticipated one of them.

Live cooking show
Even Pep Moreno, a Michelin star with his restaurant ‘Deliranto’, offered a workshop in the morning with oil tasting included, which was very educational for the attendees. The morning session then continued with a tasting of Celler Carles Andreu cava, from Conca de Barberà, by Wine Palace. Although the great fun for the youngest came in the afternoon, when the children’s pizza creation workshop was held. A huge success among the little ones. It is an initiative of Restaurant D’Albert, with the collaboration of Pastoret. The event is repeated this afternoon, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

Although these are not the only activities planned for these three days of gastronomic pleasure. For today, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., an educational workshop on waste and oceans has also been organized by Good Karma Projects, which will be followed (from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.) by a tasting of Street Food, by Edu Cuesta, prestigious restaurateur of Salou. It will be a tribute to the cuisine of the world or, as the chef himself details, “it is about merging different cuisines, such as Catalan, Spanish, Vietnamese… Thus, for example, we will make a fusion of pita bread with sausage scattered».

But at ‘Sabor Salou’ you don’t just eat. It is also drunk. That is why you can find numerous types of beers, wines and all kinds of gourmet products. Suppliers and brands have not wanted to miss the opportunity to exhibit their novelties in this show, which they understand may be the starting signal for a “promising” season.
Sponsors will continue to hold contests, promotions and relaxation areas today. For example, Bliss has its own chill-out, where visitors can relax and enjoy various drinks. Other exhibitors offer different possibilities, from a live ham cutting to a cocktail show.

a huge showcase
“The endorsement of its success is that it has established itself as a powerful initiative of reference on the Costa Daurada in the promotion of the local restaurant and gastronomy sector”, points out the councilor responsible for Dynamització Econòmica of the consistory and adds that he also wants become “a great showcase for many of our local and regional products, qualified and with Designation of Origin”.
For the mayor, Pere Granados, “gastronomy is part of the important tourist offer of our municipality.” What comes to suppose «an added value within the economic activity of Salou. Restoration continues throughout the year and, therefore, we must bet on making it more dynamic and taking advantage of it as a seasonal element for the season, generating stable employment».

Meanwhile, Mari Paz, from the Arena Restaurant, did not stop serving drinks. “It is non-stop. I have come this morning, I will be in the afternoon and, with the number of people there, tomorrow we will repeat », she pointed out while she talked with the customers who queued in front of the establishment’s stand. In addition, the stop provided another incentive: listening to live music by Elisabeth Borne. She was joined, starting at 8 pm, by Lunattic and Rock & Grill, with a DJ at her stand.

And for the youngest, Europa FM (official broadcaster of the event) has scheduled DJ sessions with two of its star DJs: Xavi Alfaro and Roger Freedom, who will travel especially for the occasion.

Nothing better than moving the skeleton to finish a good tapas and before going home. Of course, with the pleasant memory of having passed through the gastronomic paradise.
