Protest over rising fuel prices

About thirty tractors and private cars made a slow march this Tuesday from El Morell to the Repsol industry in La Pobla de Mafumet to denounce the escalation in fuel and fertilizer prices. After traveling the two kilometers that separate the municipality from the industry, the tractors stopped in front of the Repsol offices and blocked a short stretch of road that leads to the complex.

Unió de Pagesos calculates that the cost of diesel has risen by 215% in the last year and criticizes Repsol’s profits, with a refinery in Tarragona, of 2,499 million euros. The protest, which was part of the mobilization campaign with the slogan La pagesia diu prou, lasted until the afternoon.
The tractor unit left at 10 in the morning from the urban center of El Morell (Tarragonès) and stopped halfway through the T-750 highway where the Repsol Química industrial complex, its offices and the access road to the refinery of the company are located. oil company The union estimates that the cost of diesel B has risen by 215% in the last year –and that it would already come from an increase of 95.8% in January 2021–.

The peasants contrast this scenario with the fact that Repsol, with the only existing oil refinery in Catalonia, has made public that its profits last year reached 2,499 million euros, a record figure in recent years. “That is why we have located the mobilization here: it is a strategic point,” said Pere Guinovart, territorial coordinator of the union in Camp de Tarragona. «Who is behind fuels, phytosanitary products, fertilizers, plastics, and also in terms of gas and electricity? Repsol. Faced with these production costs, and without a law that regulates our prices, we Pauyees do not have continuity and that affects all production sectors, we have never all been in crisis, and this is very worrying for a country,” Guinovart said.
