Approach literature in a different way. This is what the Association of Players and Role Players of Reus (AJJRR) is proposing, coinciding with Sant Jordi, which yesterday dedicated a new edition of its Acadèmia de Jocs to letters. The entity, which has a huge toy library – probably one of the largest in Catalonia – with around 500 references between role-playing games, board games, card games and others, opened the boxes of several of them “so that anyone can start or encouraged to play.
Among the titles, as specified by the treasurer of the AJJRR, Hèctor Sancho, «The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Around the world in 80 days, El Capitán Alatriste, Miguel Strogoff… which are based on books, in authors, in some adventure or science fiction novels, others that have also been transferred to the cinema or even directly in the field of literature». Several groups of young people came throughout the afternoon to try the selection that had been prepared for this special event, related to JRR Tolkien, Jules Verne or Ken Follet.
«It is a type of game that, perhaps, is not specifically sought after because it is linked to literature, but one finds that one is playing with elements based on a novel or in a world that has been created by a writer”, adds Sancho, who indicates that “for example, Dune of origin is a book and usually the franchises of fantastic literature or science fiction sagas are the ones with the most board games”.
The Acadèmia de Jocs is promoted by the entity aimed at players who «do not need to have any previous baggage, but rather one can come directly to try and get to know us; one of our social functions is to spread the hobby and cultural practice, games of all kinds, and we try to do that periodically». And it is that “in the end, part of the grace of this is that board games are based on things from popular, traditional culture or, as we have seen, on literature.”
Currently, the Reus Players and Role Players Association has about 40 members, but “we are not closed to them, the purpose is precisely to show ourselves to the whole world and every month we carry out an event with this objective”. The treasurer details that “from the age of 14 it is already possible to become a member, but we also carry out activities for players from the age of 12 or even younger if they are accompanied by their parents or guardians.”
On May 14, the entity has scheduled another activity, called Entaula’t, which is “an open and free proposal for alternative nightlife for young people, another possibility beyond going out to clubs and bars, which is to spend the night playing or watching movies of various genres.”
