On Monday, Johan Cruyff would have turned 75. The three-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, player, coach and Honorary President of FC Barcelona, in short, a legend of world football, left such a great legacy that even today, six years after his death, he is still very present . Not only in Barcelona or Amsterdam, cities in which the ‘flying Dutchman’ marked an era (two in the culé case), but also in more humble municipalities such as Constantí.
Two years ago the town had a soccer field that was installed by the Johan Cruyff Foundation under the values that ‘El Flaco’ upheld. But it was not until this Wednesday, when its official presentation took place with the presence of Johan Cruyff’s son, Jordi Cruyff, the daughter and president of the Fundació Cruyff, Susila Cruyff, as well as the president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, great friend of the coach and lover of the footballer. “I combed my hair like him,” recalled the current Barça manager who praised the Dutchman as “one of the most important characters in the club, rivaling the founder Joan Gamper himself.”
Before an unusual presence of cameras and journalists, the protagonists were almost a hundred boys and girls from schools in the municipality. The field has been created for them, «a place -as Susila Cruyff said- for free in which to promote sport and through it social transformation and inclusion». A space in which the only rule is the 14 rules that Johan Cruyff bequeathed, such as responsibility, team play, integration or respect.
Jordi Cruyff recalled the Cruyff Courts “they have already reached 300 fields in 20 different countries with the same spirit based on my father’s youth with sport as a union, because when we play sports we don’t argue.” The current advisor to FC Barcelona recalled Johan’s father figure as “a strict father, but he spent a lot of time with us, playing any sport and winning, he always won.”
The mayor of Constantí, Óscar Sánchez, showed “the pride of having a Cruyff Foundation pitch for the values that the foundation represents, which he already instilled when Johan was a player and coach. This summer a youth championship of the Foundation.
Constantí is the 13th of the 15 Cruyff Courts that the Fundació Cruyff has installed in Catalonia with the collaboration of the Fundació La Caixa and the Fundació FC Barcelona.
