Consolidation of the old granary of the Carme de Valls convent, from the 16th century

The convent of Carme de Valls will be founded in 1321 and was the system in Catalonia of the Order of Carmelite men’s shoes. During the prop of set-cents years of existence of the convent, it has undergone different modifications in order to adapt it to the needs of each moment. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, a granary was incorporated into the conventual complex, declared a Bé Cultural d’Interès Local.

The barn is currently in a very deplorable state of conservation, with all its historical importance. Now, the City Council will end the works of provisional consolidation and dismantling of the building. “We have commissioned a first phase of the project, which is public exhibition”, said Sònia Roca, Councilor for Urbanism and Heritage.

“It will be a first consolidation of the building, which is about to end. Let’s keep the one that remains”, he stresses. He afegeix that from here they will be able to draw up the plans and studies for the project.

The municipal ple of February 22 of l’any passat will approve unanimously -and on June 10 definitively the Commission of Territory of Catalonia- the catalog of benefits to be protected by the municipal term, including the church and the convent complex del Carmen.

According to the law, they must fully protect the three buildings -the church and the bell tower, the convent and the granary-, the general volume, the structure of the plants and exterior and interior facades. Regarding the barn, he pointed out that the walls of Tàpia de Rei needed an urgent structural consolidation.

The granary is a building with a square floor plan, with approximate dimensions of 9×9 meters. Tea a low plant, a first pee and some golfs covered by a teulada a quatre aigües. As far as the structure is concerned, it has a very clear scheme, with the four faces and the central pillar supporting all the horizontal structures and the roof.

The stability of the building is “completely precarious”, according to the project. S’have ensulsit dues façanes, probably per bolcada cap a l’exterior, i la meitat de la coberta. The part of the building that remains dempeus is in a state of limit deterioration.

The granary has a small covered annex, with walls of totxana and prefabricated formigó biguetes, which is also in a state of ruin. In addition, there are stone walls that contain two spaces adjacent to the building, as patios or corrals.

In the project it is recalled that the surroundings of the barn have historically had patches of land and runes, especially on the south-west coast, and that it is possible that there are hanging structures both per rune and hidden by uncontrolled vegetation.

The objective is to maintain stability to the rest of the architecture, which is in very poor condition and is on the verge of ensorrament. And also in a progressive degradation, for which it is valued and prioritized that the repair tasks follow the maximum of insurance.

Before starting the works, the access to the interior of the property is unfeasible, for which it is not possible to see the archaeological works in a previous way. Per això, this archaeological follow-up of the intervention is farà during the works, benefiting the auxiliary services and all the security elements.

Sònia Roca recalls that the old barn is a public facility, “we need to value the final one that is donated to it”. After this initial consolidation, a detailed study of the facing and dismantling of this area and a tank will be made.
