Cambrils pedals like never before | Tarragona Newspaper

On his Chopper bike with which he has been moving around the municipality for some time, with his unmistakable helmet in the colors of the Penya Cicloturista Cambrils to protect himself from the sun and surrounded by cyclists of all ages Jordi Mariné did not want to miss the appointment. He was possibly the most illustrious of the participants in the Bicycle Festival; possibly also the most veteran of that extraordinary ‘platoon’ that was formed yesterday in the Parc del Pinaret and, possibly, one of the few that have taken part in almost all the 39 editions held since this march was born, of which it was also one of its promoters. Mariné, 80 years old and an Olympian in the Tokyo ’64 road race, was one more in the central and most massive act of the Cambribike, the event that has turned the town into the epicenter of cycling in all its facets throughout the Weekend.

Older, younger, entire families, diverse, couples, singles… this popular ride brought together 550 cyclists who did not want to miss out on the opportunity to ride an easy nine-kilometre route through the town with departure and arrival to the park located next to the center ancient.

“We had a great time. with the little ones Rarely can you ride so calmly, also having priority throughout the route », explained Xavier, one of the participants, who was accompanied by his two children.

The arrival of the large group coincided with the traffic education circuit in full operation and the exhibitors, among whom were several companies from Cambrila, offering information and selling various of their articles.

“It has been going very well for us all weekend. We are very happy”, detailed Laura Moreno, from Rodabike, one of the participating local companies, while on stage Martín Pagliano encouraged the participants in the third session of the Indoor Pedals Non Stop Cycle. “We are going to move our legs and also our hearts for the boys and girls who suffer from cancer,” he said through the microphone, accompanied by several monitors. The money raised will go to the childhood cancer research unit at the Sant Joan de Déu hospital in Barcelona.

It was an excellent climax to a Cambribike that has placed the municipality at the epicenter of cycling in all its facets (this Sunday there was also a cycling tour and on Saturday, another four MTB with different distances and another for Kids in the Park). The events have had 1,500 registered, without counting the companions, with participants also coming from outside the demarcation.

The mayor of Cambrila, Oliver Klein, highlighted on this third edition of Cambrike that «all the sectors of cycling that we touch are booming and also the organized activities fit in all ages. There are people looking for the weekend to do them and we are on their calendar ». “It’s a good claim,” he summed up about this sports tourism event that also serves to deseasonalize the purely summer season. “People have come from many places during these three days,” he assured.

He also stressed that the public-private cooperation formula has worked perfectly. “The leadership is from the City Council but the collaboration of the companies is essential because the events that are just scheduled are agreed with them,” he said.
