An old suitcase appears on stage. And inside, a diary, whose pages cover the life and work of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century: the Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen (1934-2016). This is the plot line of the show My secret chord, directed by the Tarragona playwright Vicente Cañón, with narration by the Sevillian writer Mayelen Fouler -also the author of the text- and live music by the American guitarist JJ White. It opens on Thursday, April 29, at 7:45 p.m., at the Espai Nautilus in Tarragona.
The work, which fuses theater and music, delves into intimate and unknown passages of Cohen and his ancestors, Jewish exiles from Lithuania and Poland who settled in Canada. JJ White will perform, meanwhile, some of the artist’s best-known songs. «It is an intimate function and aimed at small spaces, where the public is very close. The result is the recreation of an illusion with touches of mystery and theatricality that uses music as one more character”, explains Cañón.
My secret chord will be performed again at the Espai Nautilus on May 6 and June 4. In addition, it will go through three other spaces in the city of Tarragona: Tàlem (May 19), Ateneu (May 29) and the Teatre el Magatzem (October 1).
